Back Where I Belong

“In a growing company like ours, there’s lots of opportunity to learn and grow, and managers and colleagues are always sharing information about open positions.”

Keith Walton Incident Manager I

I started off with BetMGM as a Senior Risk Associate back in 2019. After leaving for a while, I realized I missed the unique culture and supportive work environment. I returned as an Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Analyst, and later grew into my current role as a Technical Governance Engineer.

In Technical Governance, I’m part of a team that’s responsible for ensuring BetMGM is compliant with all state regulators in the 15+ jurisdictions in which we operate. Our work is critical to the growth and advancement of BetMGM because any product or backend change must be compliant for our company to remain operational. In my role, I process change requests, follow up on previous submissions, log approvals, help prepare for quarterly reporting, and participate in meetings where we stay abreast of upcoming state launches. You could say we’re responsible for protecting the company and ensuring we’re able to remain operational in all our jurisdictions – no small feat!

Though BetMGM is growing rapidly, our culture remains warm, welcoming, and supportive. Our leadership is transparent, starting with Adam, our CEO. He takes the time to keep everyone involved and communicates with us regularly on all aspects of the business, good or bad. Where else would you have weekly face time with your CEO about the state of our business?! Our management team is exceptional. The lines of communication are always open, and we are always encouraged to speak up and voice our views.

Keeping in line with the caring culture, managers genuinely want you to be happy in your role and with your career. In a growing company like ours, there’s lots of opportunity to learn and grow, and managers and colleagues are always sharing information about open positions.  In fact, that’s exactly how I ended up in Technical Governance. I spoke with colleagues who were already on the team and based on my skills and experience in prior positions, I was able to make the leap.

Some tips for success in my role and at BetMGM in general:

  • Be patient – When working in a highly regulated industry, it’s essential to ensure the company is always compliant. Being able to wait it out until you have the right approvals is essential to protecting the company.
  • Know how to adapt – In a rapidly growing company there is a lot going on, and priorities may shift. Having the ability to pivot while keeping your eyes on the end goal will ensure your success and the success of the company.
  • Don’t take anything personally – Everyone is smart and passionate about their work. We all bring our ideas to the table, but sometimes leaders may choose to go in a different direction than what you recommended. Being humble enough to appreciate and learn from all perspectives is a life skill!
  • Lean on management – Situations will arise where you’re unsure of which direction to take. This is the time to connect with your managers so they can guide you. They are always available and more than willing to help!

At the end of the day, my return to BetMGM says more about the company than I could write here. The culture is top-notch, and people just want the best for you. There are lots of opportunities to grow and develop from doing the work while also learning from your leadership team. It’s a great time to be part of the technology team where you can enhance your skills while you help contribute to the growth of our company!
